Betfair exchange

Betfair exchange tips

Bookmakers restrict winners. Betfair doesn't. Every long-term profitable bettor ends up on the exchange — and the best way to use it is with an independent tissue that tells you when the exchange price is wrong.

Why the exchange beats bookies long-term

  • No restrictions — Betfair doesn't care if you win
  • Tighter margins — ~102% books vs ~115% with bookies
  • Lay option — bet against a horse instead of for it
  • BSP — guaranteed liquidity at the off, often the best price available

How to find exchange value

The Value Scanner shows the Betfair Exchange price alongside every bookmaker. Sort by edge to see which horses are bigger than the tissue on Betfair specifically. If the exchange is paying 12.00 on a 9.00 tissue, that's a +33% overlay with no restriction risk.

Three exchange plays

  1. Take the price — lock in the early exchange price if it's bigger than tissue.
  2. Bet at BSP — let it run at the starting price. Beating BSP is the cleanest measure of long-term edge.
  3. Lay the unders — when a bookie favourite is shorter than tissue (negative edge), laying it on Betfair captures the same misprice from the other side.

Commission to factor in

Betfair takes 2–5% commission on net wins. A 10% edge on bookmaker price is roughly an 8% edge on Betfair after commission. Still huge versus bookmaker margin, but factor it into your staking maths.

Liquidity warning

Don't trust Betfair prices in tiny-market races (minor jump cards, low-grade all-weather) — the spreads are wide and a single trader can move the price. Stick to the main UK/IRE flat and graded NH markets.
