Back-to-Lay Strategy Explained

Back-to-lay is the safest way to profit from a value tissue. You back a horse early at a big price, then lay it on Betfair or Matchbook as the price shortens — locking in profit before the race even starts.

The core idea

If a horse has genuine value at 8.00 (7/1), the market will usually agree by the time the gates open and shorten it to, say, 5.00 (4/1). That price movement is your opportunity. You don't need the horse to win — you just need the price to shorten.

A worked example

9:30am — back £100 on Horse A at 8.00 with a bookmaker. Liability: £100.
1:55pm (5 mins to off) — Horse A is now 5.00 on Betfair Exchange.
Lay £160 at 5.00. This 'greens up' across all outcomes.
Result: ~£60 profit if it wins, ~£60 profit if it loses (after commission).

Why it works with tissue-based selections

The model identifies horses that are structurally underpriced early. As race time approaches, late money, smart syndicates and live shows correct the market — pushing prices back toward the tissue. You're getting on before the correction.

A simple greening calculator (or just use Betfair's built-in cash-out)
About 5 minutes near the off to execute

When B2L is a bad idea

Drifters — if the horse drifts instead of shortening, you can't lay at a profit. You'll need to let it run at BSP.
Tiny markets — low liquidity exchange races can have spreads that eat the edge.
Late races with no morning value — if you can't get the early price, there's nothing to lay into.
